Sanctuary

...And another reason the closing of House and Garden was such a tragedy, was the loss of Dominique Browning's Editor column.  

(I tend to start off mid-conversation with my friends.  Why does this drive men bananas?)

Her book, Around the House and in the Garden:  A Memoir of Heartbreak, Healing and Home Improvement, is an uplifting narrative about the intimate relationship between ourselves and our homes.

How we care for and sometimes rescue our houses,

and how they care for, and sometimes rescue us.

"Home," Dominique says, "is the place where we have the final say about what goes where... what feels comfortable, what is life enhancing... a place that gives us strength to go out and embrace the world."

At one time or another, all of us need a sanctuary-- someplace to high-tail it from the slings and arrows of daily life.

 

I have lost track of how many copies of this book I have purchased and loaned, 

but be sure to throw it in your bag with your bottle of champagne and favorite sweater when you head off to your hideout.

Or better yet- just climb into a pair of silk pajamas, turn off the phone, pull the front shades and pretend you're already there.
