Coincidence?

We bought these hay feeders last September to help us conserve hay from our final hay delivery in November to the delivery of first cutting in July.  Cali has one in her stall, and Bella has one too on the opposite wall.

The horses flip them over and over as they eat, so the rope twists way up.  Every morning, whoever has barn duty has to spin them back down in order to open up the clip and refill them with hay.

One day Ann and I were there together feeding the horses, and I asked her, "Have you ever noticed that we always have to untwist the hay feeders counter-clockwise?

"Yes!  I've been thinking the same thing, but I didn't want to sound crazy."

Interestingly, regardless of where the feeder is positioned in the stall, both horses turn them clockwise as they eat.  Always.  They never turn them right to left, always left to right.  Does this mean that horses are right and left handed like people?  Just a strange little equine mystery to send you off for the weekend...

You are so funny! Love this post, and the horses are beautiful by the way. And I must say some observation on your part.
Happy Friday.

That is hilarious! I'm one of those guilty people that just throws hay into the stall... on the ground. Sometimes at shows or other facilities I might acutally get out the hay bag - but who are we kidding, I'm probably going to just throw a flake on the ground! It makes sense that horses favor one direction to the other, same goes for bending. But that often has to do with the natural bend in the spine from development in the womb.

Interesting. There must be some kind of device, mountain climbing or sailing, that would prevent the rope from twisting. Kind of like those things they used to make to stop the phone cord from getting tangled up.

Perfectly timed for the Kentucky Derby - a horse themed post! So clever you both are!

That's an interesting observation...
And an even more interesting hypothesis...
Hilarious conclusion to your post...

Cheers,

Interesting. I think horses are smart so maybe they're almost as smart as some humans! :-)

Never thought of that! Gave up on hay nets and such, years ago-- just hay outside or on the floor now! Aren't they brilliant?
Happy Derby Day!

I could watch them for hours! Actually I like to stand there and watch them eat hay. They are so peaceful.

so interesting that you both noticed that. I don't have horses, but I do notice my husband's eating habits, especially with an ear of corn. perfect rows with each bite. probably clockwise! how does he do that???

You are hilarious! I'm sure Bella would feel a certain kinship with your husband, since she's a big fan of corn too.
